West Virginia breaks its record for daily COVID-19 cases
West Virginia broke its record for highest daily COVID-19 cases on Thursday as omicron continues to hit states around the country.
The state’s Department of Health and Human Resources reported 3,345 cases, almost a week after breaking the record last Friday at 2,585 cases.
The positivity rate from states stands at 17.36 percent, and 758 people who tested positive are in the hospital.
Hospitalizations are overwhelmingly from those who are unvaccinated, at 78.1 percent.
The omicron variant has caused a record number of cases in the U.S. and around the world.
Other states such as New York and Florida have broken daily COVID-19 case records multiple times recently.
The World Health Organization reported there was a weekly record jump in COVID-19 cases this past week.
The uptick is caused by the omicron variant which is far more contagious than previous strains but less deadly.
Throughout the pandemic, West Virginia has recorded more than 347,000 cases and more than 5,300 deaths.
