Vaccinated offices, gyms in San Francisco exempt from California mask mandate
San Francisco offices and gyms where everyone is vaccinated will be exempt from California's newly reimposed mask mandates.
“This means that stable cohorts of 100% fully vaccinated people in settings like workspaces and gyms will continue to be allowed to remove masks,” a statement from the San Francisco Department of Public Health said.
"This refinement acknowledges the hard work of the people of San Francisco throughout the pandemic, including the ways in which we have maintained reasonable protections heading into the holiday season," health officials added.
San Francisco Health Officer Susan Philip called the decision by the California Department of Public Health to grant the exemption a “recognition of all of the thought and care that San Francisco residents have been putting into all staying as safe as possible,” according to The San Francisco Chronicle.
California announced on Monday it would reimpose indoor mask mandates regardless of the vaccine status from Wednesday through Jan. 15. The rule was set in place in an effort to curb the spread of a possible winter surge of the virus's delta variant as well as to combat the potential of an uptick in omicron variant cases.
San Francisco will still be required to comply with other parts of the new COVID-19 policies which require that people attending events of 1,000 or more people that do not require vaccination to provide proof of a COVID-19 negative test, the Chronicle reported.
As the requirements are implemented, some companies, including Apple, have made their own decisions to require masks universally.
“Amid rising cases in many communities, we now require that all customers join our team members in wearing masks while visiting our stores,” the company said on Tuesday.
