UW-Madison promises 'disciplinary action' after crowded freshman dorm video
University of Wisconsin-Madison officials promised disciplinary action Tuesday after students were seen on video congregating in an extremely crowded residence hall and ignoring social distancing guidelines.
A spokesman for the university told the Wisconsin State-Journal that a video posted online by a Barstool Sports affiliate over the weekend showing dozens of students, which the video's caption identified as freshmen, socializing in the hallway of the dorm, in many cases just a few inches from each other.
The spokesman added that the school was at work identifying the students in the video and that “the appropriate disciplinary action" would be pursued.
UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank added in a letter to students Monday that undergraduates were directed to avoid all social gatherings for two weeks and recommit themselves to following social distancing guidelines, while putting the blame for new COVID-19 cases at the school on undergraduate social life.
“In particular, I am asking all undergraduates to avoid social gatherings,” she said, according to the newspaper. “These are the major cause of the spread we have seen.”
“If infections don’t fall, we will need to make more difficult decisions that significantly reduce our ability to have campus open to students,” Blank reportedly continued.
Universities around the country have struggled with controlling the spread of coronavirus as undergraduate life has returned to many campuses around the country, resulting in many schools reporting clusters of the virus in student residence halls and off-campus housing, including Greek life residences.
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill moved to suspend all in-person classes just weeks after welcoming students back to campus in August after dozens of students tested positive for the virus.
