University Recruitment Recap: Spring 2023
This week, POLITICO Careers heard from Jackie Ramsay, Talent Acquisition Partner, about her experiences running our campus recruitment program.
Over the past two years, I’ve been spearheading POLITICO’s university and community recruitment strategy with the goal to bring leading talent to our organization. This spring, we met with hundreds of job & internship seekers and had a great time!
Between January and May, we hosted 15 information sessions, career fairs, networking events and meet-ups, and met with over 1,100 prospective candidates! 22 POLITICOs from our Newsroom, and Business and Talent Teams led sessions, and we were even able to host our first in-person event at our Headquarters since before the pandemic.
One of my favorite moments from this season was participating in the American University (AU) Spring 2023 Job & Internship Fair in April – my alma mater! It was a full circle moment for me since I attended the same fair seven years prior. Being on the other side of the recruiting booth was truly rewarding to be able to share my journey from studying foreign policy in the School of International Service (SIS) to hiring politics & policy reporters (and more) in my role at POLITICO.
In February, we participated in Military Veterans in Journalism’s Talent Scout Series, where John Yearwood (Editorial Director of Diversity and Culture) and I led an information session on POLITICO’s work culture and newsroom environment. We met with 20 MVJ members and look forward to continuing our partnership later this Fall.
Lastly, we hosted three students from the Syracuse Newhouse School of Public Communications who were interning in D.C. this semester (my first in-person event at our HQ since I started at POLITICO virtually during the pandemic). In partnership with Beverly Kirk, Professor in Practice and Director, Washington Programs, students participated in an information session and panel discussion with four POLITICO staff across several departments and teams (a few were Syracuse alums!) to hear about their journeys from college to POLITICO. Fun fact – Beverly and I worked together 5 years ago at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). I consider her one of my early mentors and it was so good to see her again a little bit later in our careers!
These are only a few of the many exciting events we held this spring. As graduation season comes to a close, we’re excited to see our impact as we continue to hire great talent into the summer. See you again in the Fall!
