Reason for Seeking Public Office:
The First Congressional District is and will always be my home. I grew up here, raised my children here, and go to church here. It is where I learned about the value of hard work from my father and grandfather, who I followed into business. And, it's where I learned our values -- conservative values.
In fact, I was motivated to first run for office for that very reason. When a log truck accident tragically claimed the life of a local mother and her daughter, bureaucrats said we couldn't license a design to transport timber more safely simply because it added a bit of length, but absolutely no weight, to a log truck.
Since bureaucrats wouldn't listen to common sense, we made them listen to the law as the first bill I passed upon being elected to office was Shayla's Law to attempt to ensure that the tragedy that struck our community would not be repeated.
Although the cause may differ, the reason why I am running for Congress, and why I am passionate about doing so, remains the same: My real frustration that Washington refuses to listen to us. Whether it is on our concerns about health care, the suffocating national debt, illegal immigration, or unreasonable policies and regulations, Washington DC refuses to hear our voice. It's time for Washington to listen to Northern Michigan.
