Maine Treasurer (2014 - 2019)
Hayes was selected by the Maine State Legislature to replace Neria Douglass as the treasurer in December 2014. House Minority Leader Ken Fredette (R) cited her reputation and independence as reasons why she was nominated by Republican legislators and selected in a bipartisan vote. Hayes became an independent in early 2014 and worked as a field organizer for independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler.
