2016

A special election for the position of Mississippi House of Representatives District 72 was called for August 23. A runoff election was held on September 13. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was July 25.

The seat was vacant following Kimberly Campbell's (D) resignation in May 2016.

A. Shae Buchanon-Williams, Synarus Green, Debra Gibbs, and Theresa Kennedy faced off in the special election. Candidates in Mississippi special elections run without party labels. Since no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters, Green and Gibbs, met in a runoff election, which Gibbs won.
