Prominent Kentucky Dem backs Booker over McGrath in bid to oust McConnell
June 16, 2020Former Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes on Tuesday endorsed Senate candidate Charles Booker in the Democratic primary to challenge Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in November.
“Proud to endorse my friend @Booker4KY for U.S. Senate in the Kentucky Democratic Primary! Together, let’s elect a new generation of leadership in KY! #Booker4KY,” Lundergan Grimes tweeted.
Lundergan Grimes, one of Kentucky’s most prominent Democrats, served two terms as secretary of state and has been a Senate candidate herself, unsuccessfully facing off against McConnell in his most recent reelection battle in 2014.
Her show of support for Booker, a state representative, adds another boost to his insurgent primary campaign against Amy McGrath, the former fighter pilot who became a darling of the Democratic Party during her failed 2018 House bid.
Booker’s candidacy has experienced a surge of momentum in recent weeks amid protests over racial injustice and police brutality in his hometown of Louisville — where Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old black woman, was fatally shot by police in March.
Booker has also been backed by leading progressives, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), and has secured the endorsement of Kentucky’s two largest newspapers.
The Democratic primary for Senate in Kentucky will take place on June 23.
