Progressive groups boost spending against Engel
June 18, 2020Two top progressive groups are ramping up their spending on a super PAC to elect Jamaal Bowman in the closely watched congressional race in New York’s 16th District.
Justice Democrats and the Working Families Party, which previously announced that they would spend a half-million dollars on TV ads and phone canvassing to back Bowman, told POLITICO they are putting down another $250,000-plus in the days before the June 23 primary.
Their spike in funding comes as Bowman, who is challenging longtime Democratic incumbent Rep. Eliot Engel, is gaining momentum. In recent weeks, Bowman has won endorsements from Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The pro-Bowman super PAC will be airing a new TV ad on Friday featuring Jumaane Williams, New York City’s public advocate, who has thrown his weight behind Bowman. In the spot, Williams is sitting in a park alongside a diverse group of young people.
“These streets are filled with black bodies abused by a plague of systemic racism,” Williams says them alongside a shot of the Bronx, which later cuts to an image of Washington D.C. “But these streets don't care, filled with the same old politicians pushing the same old ideas. We need a voice from our streets: Jamaal Bowman.” Williams ends the ad looking into the camera and saying, “And we will have justice.”
The left sees the primary as one of its last opportunities to oust a Democratic incumbent in Congress this year. The death of George Floyd has increased the urgency among progressives to elect Bowman. The 44-year-old middle-school principal, who is black, has talked about his own experiences facing police brutality and criticized Engel’s vote for the 1994 crime bill.
"Jumaane Williams has become one of the most trusted voices on racial justice in New York," said Maurice Mitchell, Working Families Party’s national director, of the new spot. "He speaks with real moral authority, and his advocacy will mean a lot."
The group’s super PAC has also previously aired a TV ad bashing Engel over comments he made at an event amid the nation’s civil unrest. While being recorded by a hot mic, he said, “If I didn’t have a primary, I wouldn’t care.” Engel said at the time that “in the context of running for reelection, I thought it was important for people to know where I stand, that's why I asked to speak.”
Engel has been endorsed in the last week by Hillary Clinton, Rep. Jim Clyburn and Sen. Chuck Schumer.
Justice Democrats and the Working Families Party said they are boosting their spending partly in an attempt to match higher expenditure in recent days by Engel’s campaign and the pro-Engel super PAC Democratic Majority for Israel. Engel and DMFI are on track to spend a combined $900,000 on TV and digital spots by the end of the primary, according to Advertising Analytics.
