Special election

A special election for the office of Massachusetts State Senate Third Essex District was held on March 6, 2018. The primary election took place on February 6, 2018. In November 2017, state Sen. Thomas McGee (D) announced that he would resign from the state Senate effective January 2, 2018, in order to become the mayor of Lynn.
