The seat became vacant following Oliver Robinson's (D) resignation on November 30, 2016. He retired wishing to avoid conflicts of interest resulting from his daughter's appointment as Governor's Liaison to the House of Representatives.
Rolanda Hollis defeated James Howell and Rodney Huntley in the Democratic primary with more than 60 percent of the vote. No Republicans or third party candidates qualified for the election. Because of this, the winner of the Democratic primary election was the winner of the District 58 seat.
