Newsom fundraising for fellow Dems hit $11.6 million in 2020
November 2, 2020
California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s highest-profile moments in the 2020 election have featured him effusively praising the work of President Donald Trump — or at least declining to lay into the president.
But behind the scenes, the leader of the nation’s biggest state — and its unofficial political ATM — has been burning up Zoom calls and raising millions of dollars to oust Trump.
Newsom tapped his network of donors to bring in about $11.6 million for candidates and causes over the 2020 election cycle, according to summaries of his activity shared with POLITICO. Newsom’s total includes a combined more than $8 million for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
Biden’s newly released list of bundlers features several members of Congress and Democratic leaders who have raised money for the ticket, including 2020 primary opponents and former contenders for Biden’s VP pick. But the threshold to appear on the roster of elite fundraisers, just $100,000, is so low that it’s difficult to make direct comparisons. Still, Newsom’s totals likely make him one of the biggest rainmakers among Democratic politicians, and certainly one of the largest without a consistent public presence in the campaign.
Where Newsom has been most visible on the national stage has been with Trump. They toured fire-ravaged areas in California this fall, where Trump boasted about their relationship, which Newsom described as “very effective” as he pledged to put politics aside. At Trump’s final burst of rallies in recent weeks and earlier in Trump's TV ads, the president's campaign has featured video of Newsom and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo testifying to the Republican administration’s efforts to fight the coronavirus.
Newsom and Jennifer Siebel Newsom, California’s first partner, held a half-dozen virtual fundraisers for Biden over the spring and fall. Newsom also headlined fundraisers for Harris this spring, and late last year when she was still a candidate herself, that raised $1 million apiece.
Down-ticket, Newsom helped raise at least $2 million for House races, much of it with and for California Democrats, as well as $500,000 to support Democratic governors and $250,000 for Senate candidates, with money going to Jaime Harrison in South Carolina, Steve Bullock in Montana, Mark Kelly in Arizona and several other candidates running in close races in Maine, Iowa, Georgia, Colorado and North Carolina.
