MoveOn moves on to 3 competitive Senate races
October 7, 2020MoveOn is jumping into three competitive Senate races to the tune of $2 million in ads, the latest sign that progressives are moving their focus to flipping the Senate with President Donald Trump on the ropes.
The liberal group is hitting GOP Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Martha McSally of Arizona and Susan Collins of Maine in ads targeting minorities, women and young people, according to a person familiar with the buy. The ads hit Graham as “phony,” McSally as after people’s health care and Collins for not standing more firmly against Trump.
Moreover, some of the ads will feature the words and likeness of the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg as progressives try to make the GOP’s push to fill the Supreme Court vacancy backfire. Another ad highlights Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and the death toll of more than 200,000 people.
Thus far, MoveOn has concentrated primarily on the presidential race in its spending, though it has endorsed a number of Senate candidates, bundled money for them and runs a massive national field program. But the $2 million ad spend marks the biggest move into the down-ballot races by the group yet.
The group said it was launching the late series of buys after financial support for MoveOn’s PAC increased in the days after Senate Republicans launched plans to quickly fill Ginsburg’s seat with Amy Coney Barrett right before the election.
“As the death toll keeps rising and the economic pain continues to get worse, Donald Trump and Senate Republicans continue to do nothing to help suffering and struggling families and instead are focused on stacking the Supreme Court and denying voters a say,” said Rahna Epting, executive director of MoveOn’s political arm. “It’s remarkable. It’s appalling. And this campaign is part of the effort to ensure we vote them out.”
