At the time she took office as lieutenant governor, Taylor also assumed the role of Ohio director of insurance. She resigned as director of insurance on March 31, 2017, to focus on her role as lieutenant governor and to prepare for her 2018 gubernatorial campaign.

Taylor was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 2003 to 2006.

Taylor was the 65th lieutenant governor of Ohio. She was first elected in 2010 on the Republican ticket with John Kasich, the governor of Ohio. She assumed office on January 10, 2011. She served until January 2019.
