Policy Positions

Washington State Legislative Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Abortion & Reproductive

1. Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
- Pro-choice

2. Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
- Yes

3. Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
- No

4. Other or expanded principles
- Women are autonomous beings. Reproductive health is a private decision that should be made between a physician and a doctor. My father was a physician and this was his firm belief.

Budget, Spending, & Tax

Budget Stabilization:

Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Washington's budget.

1. Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
- No

2. Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees?
- No

3. Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients?
- No

4. Other or expanded principles
- I do not support reducing benefits for the poorest and most vulnerable. Those who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid (the elderly poor), in fact, deserve our immediate healthcare support. I support a capital gains tax that exempts family home and farm sales, with other possible exemptions, to fund universal, low-cost pre-school and reduced tuition for higher education and vocational training after high-school. Federal middle-class tax cuts are temporary, but permanent for the wealthiest in Washington. I have been both poor and run a successful business. We must make sure we are one society, not fractured through economic inequality.

Campaign Finance & Government Reform

1. Do you support any limits on campaign contributions to state candidates?
- Yes

2. Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
- Yes

3. Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
- Yes

4. Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- In WA state, we vote by mail. Non-citizens can get photo identification. Only U.S. citizens can and should be able to vote. It's a privilege of citizenship that none of us should take for granted. I do not take any corporate or PAC donations. I believe we need to find a way for regular citizens to run for office. I will only take $1 if elected as my salary, and I will fight to ensure that the redistricting commission recognizes that our district has split up the Yakima School district and two minority city council districts through its boundaries.

Crime & Public Safety

1. Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
- No

2. Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
- Yes

3. Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
- No

4. Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- I worked with the California Appellate Project and strongly condemn state sponsored violence. I own a marijuana business; it is a non-addictive, natural herb that so many have successfully used as an alternative to pharmaceuticals and opioids. Currently, WA state only prosecutes juveniles for the most severe crimes. We need to ensure all juveniles are properly represented; as an attorney, and according to statistics, minorities lack representation in the process and thus are sentenced at a much higher rate. I do not support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state, local police, or vigilante justice groups.

Economic

1. Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
- Yes

2. Do you support lowering state taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
- Yes

3. Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector?
- Yes

4. Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
- Yes

5. Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
- No

6. Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Washington?
- Yes

7. Other or expanded principles
- a) I support investment in clean energy technology and public transit to both stimulate the economy and promote new, cleaner technologies. b) I want to reduce sin taxes which hit low-income people. They should be spending those tax dollars in their local small businesses rather than sending it to Olympia. e) so define drug? f) I think minimum wage increase should be up to localities. Statewide, I support paying agricultural workers the same as any other employee, a wage and regular overtime hours. I do not support carve outs for agriculture, either in wage or the environment.

Education

1. Do you support adopting federal education standards in Washington?
- No

2. Do you support state funding for charter schools?
- Yes

3. Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Washington high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
- Yes

4. Do you support increasing funding for the state education budget?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- I am public school educated and a Princeton graduate. Education opens the door to everything. I do not believe that districts like ours, with high student turn-over rates no fault of our teachers, should be beholden to test results in order to secure funding. Employers need more dollars to go to vocational training; but any child who wants to go to college should be able to do so. Teacher pay for K-12 education should be based on student need, not teacher cost of living. We need to attract the best teachers to our high needs schools here in LD 14.

Environment & Energy

1. Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
- Yes

2. Do you support state government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
- Yes

3. Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
- Yes

4. Other or expanded principles
- Our environment and the economy that relies on that environment is in peril. We must act now to prevent the irreversible damage that is already running its course. I believe that polluters should pay; no free riders. I believe that point-source polluters, like coal plants, must be a part of any action to reduce carbon emissions.

Gun

1. Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
- Yes

2. Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
- Yes

3. Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom?
- No

4. Should a license be required for gun ownership?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- b) We already have closed the gun show loophole in WA. d) I generally support all civil liberties with narrowly tailored laws to prevent overburdensome government regulation, unless the public safety concern is grave enough.

Health

1. Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
- No

2. Do you support Medicaid expansion through Washington's health care programs?
- Yes

3. Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
- Yes

4. Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
- Yes

5. Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
- Yes

6. Other or expanded principles
- I own a marijuana store. We were promised the tax dollars would go to programs such as drug treatment. Let's re-allocate those funds, as well as reduce the sin tax on marijuana so that those trying to get off opioids with the help of their physicians can afford marijuana products.

Social

1. Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Washington's anti-discrimination laws?
- Yes

2. Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Washington's anti-discrimination laws?
- Yes

3. Do you support greater efforts by Washington state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
- Yes

4. Other or expanded principles
- Without adequate childcare and quality pre-schools, women have to take time off from work or their work is disrupted. As a working mom, I take my kids everywhere and I understand the struggle. The pay gap will not be closed until businesses are more mother friendly and their are more options for women to get their children into safe and affordable care or education.

Legislative Priorities

In the following area, please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.
- 1. I hope to address income inequality by bringing more business and blue collar jobs to LD 14. Marijuana is a perfect example of a booming industry that provides living wage jobs and would be perfect for LD 14. I have vast experience in this industry, but I also want to encourage young people and entrepreneurs to settle in LD 14. This requires investment and private public partnerships in affordable and rental housing.2. Civil rights and healthcare access for the poor. I want to stand up for the rights of minorities and immigrants in my community.
