Resignation announcement

Jan. 1, 1900

Schoenbeck's resignation announcement came in the wake of a sales tax increase. Schoenbeck campaigned and voted for the increase, but the Republican leadership opposed it. On February 19, 2016, Schoenbeck revived the tax increase when it failed by one vote the previous day. Schoenbeck was vocal against fellow Republicans in relation to the sales tax increase. He called a statement made by Rep. Steve Westra (R) during a house debate on February 18, "garbage." Later that same evening, he wrote messages on Twitter about House leader Rep. Brian Gosch (R) and Rep. Westra calling them "chicken." The state house voted 47-21 to approve the sales tax increase on February 22. In reaction to Schoenbeck's support of the tax increase, House Republicans blocked Schoenbeck from the caucus meeting on February 22.
