Fiegen was first appointed to the position by Governor Dennis Daugaard on August 9, 2011 to fill a vacancy on the commission. She was elected to serve the remaining four years of the six-year term in the general election on November 6, 2012.

Fiegen served as a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives for four terms. During her tenure, she was the chair of the House Health and Human Service Committee.
