Kellyanne Conway: Trump could postpone convention speech because of hurricane
August 26, 2020White House counselor Kellyanne Conway suggested Wednesday that President Donald Trump might postpone his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention due to concerns about Hurricane Laura’s potentially devastating impact on the Gulf Coast.
Asked whether Trump would delay his headliner address set to take place on Thursday, the final night of Republicans’ four-day nominating event, Conway told reporters that campaign officials would not rule out a possible adjustment to the convention schedule.
“We never say no around here, because things happen at a volume and velocity around here, and we adapt to events. As of right now, the president plans to speak tomorrow,” Conway said, according to a White House pool report.
Conway’s remarks came as the GOP convention kicked off its third night of programming despite the National Hurricane Center warning of “unsurvivable storm surge” as a result of Laura bearing down on western Louisiana and eastern Texas.
The Category 4 storm is expected to make landfall on Wednesday night into early Thursday near the border between the two states, according to The Weather Channel.
Wednesday’s convention programming also comes amid ongoing civil unrest and incidents of violence that have arisen in Kenosha, Wis., after a police officer shot a Black man, Jacob Blake, multiple times in the back in front of his young children.
The NBA also postponed its three playoff games scheduled for Wednesday as players around the league boycotted in response to racism and police brutality.
Earlier in the day, the Milwaukee Bucks — the NBA’s team from Wisconsin — did not take the floor for their playoff game against the Orlando Magic. In baseball, the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds agreed not to play their game.
