Tracker:By Joe Barton and Steve Scalise "Let us develop the resources of our land " These words, the beginning of a quotation of Daniel Webster, are emblazoned upon a plaque hung prominently in the House of Representatives' chamber. They certainly hold true today as Republicans work to grow our economy, create good-paying jobs, make life more affordable for hardworking families and bolster America's national security. The fact is, America is blessed with tremendous energy resources, and whenever we responsibly develop these resources, the benefits flow to our people. Jobs, economic growth, making life more affordable and energy security -- these are just some of the positive benefits hardworking taxpayers have enjoyed from American energy. Throughout the Gulf Coast region, our oil and gas industry remains the heartbeat of our economy -- an amazing success story that creates good-paying jobs by providing homegrown energy to America and our allies. In Texas and Louisiana alone, the oil and gas industry supports well over 2 million jobs directly and indirectly, from oil patch workers to engineers, service industry workers to truck drivers, computer programmers and more. The average salary of an oil and gas industry worker in the Gulf Coast region is about $80,000 a year, and the industry contributes tens of billions of dollars to our regional economy. With results like these, every state blessed with valuable energy resources should have the same opportunity to replicate our success. Whether we're talking about the Gulf Coast, coal country or the Bakken and Marcellus shale plays, our technological advancements have proven that American energy production can pay similar dividends throughout the nation. We ought to be doing more to unleash the power of this American energy revolution. But for years, President Barack Obama has been trying to reverse these opportunities by imposing radical regulations that are rooted in a failed cap-and-trade scheme. With these and other wrong-headed policies, the president and his administration are waging a notorious "War on Coal" that is hurting American workers and their families. Just this month, the president met with the leaders of other nations in Paris to pursue his global warming agenda that will make America less competitive, kill jobs and raise costs for hardworking families. Just imagine the foolish notion that an administration that could not even properly build a website to sell health insurance policies can somehow control the earth's temperature. Meanwhile, America has lost 80,000 jobs as oil producers have been forced to scale back their rigs by 60 percent, yet the president and his radical environmentalist supporters have fought tooth and nail to keep America the only nation in the world with a self-imposed ban on exporting our own crude oil. Instead of helping Americans compete on the global stage and benefit from our incredible energy resources, the presidenet and his allies are doing the exact opposite, blocking enormous opportunities and trying to force their own radical agenda on the rest of us. You'll see that huge cost in everything from higher food and electricity prices, to thousands more lost jobs. That's just wrong. House Republicans are committed to fighting for the millions of Americans who will directly benefit from developing our country's plentiful energy resources. And in recent weeks, we have passed several pieces of legislation to do just that. We have stood against the president's illegal so-called Clean Power Plan and New Source Performance Standard that will drive up the cost of electricity. We voted to approve the Keystone XL Pipeline. We have voted to upgrade our aging energy infrastructure, and now we have finally passed legislation to end the outdated ban on crude oil exports, part of a crucial bill which the president just signed into law. Lifting the ban will create an estimated 1 million American jobs throughout the nation and add $170 billion annually to our GDP. In fact, it is estimated that for every job created in the oil and gas sector, six will be created in the broader economy, while gas prices here at home could drop as much as 13 cents per gallon, helping families save more at the pump. This is a historic victory for America and for our region. We're proud to have led the charge in the House to help Americans capitalize on our energy potential so we can create good jobs, our economy can continue to grow and more families can have an opportunity to achieve the American Dream. There is still work to be done, but together we have taken some tremendous strides in recent months.
