Campaign themes

The following issues were listed on Smith's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, .

  • Economy: Income inequality is one of the biggest problems facing the people of our country. The top one tenth of one percent of earners controls almost as much wealth as the bottom 90% combined! On top of that, we allow for 20% of our children to hungry in America! This is unacceptable. I will push for progressive answers to this problem. I believe we should tax the wealthy that do no pay their fair share, such as hedge fund managers. I think that we should lower taxes on middle-income families and increase taxes on the top 1%. This problem will not be solved with taxes alone.
  • Citizens United: Citizens United must be repealed through an amendment to the constitution. There is no other way to state the fact. Citizens United was one of the most disastrous rulings by the Supreme Court in our history. Today, a billionaire can buy his or her own candidate for President, or, they can buy as many candidates for Congress as they wish. This is not how a democracy works. Money does not equal freedom of speech and corporations are not people.
  • Climate Change/Global Warming: There is no bigger pressing danger to our society than that created by man-made climate change. There is no more debate about whether this is happening. Science has made this point loud and clear. We don’t have to look to the retracting arctic sea ice to get a glimpse of what is happening. We can look in our own backyards. California is experiencing an unprecedented drought, Boston received more snow that it ever last winter. Places all around the country are experiencing extreme weather and it is only a matter of time before we are affected as well.
