Biden shrugs off Bloomberg's potential bid
November 8, 2019CONCORD, N.H. — Former Vice President Joe Biden welcomed businessman Michael Bloomberg potentially jumping into the Democratic primary, dismissing the notion that it's a reflection of his performance in the race.
“In terms of he’s running because of me, the last polls I looked at, I’m pretty far ahead,” Biden told reporters. “If I’m not mistaken, I’m doing pretty well both relative to Trump and relative to all the people running in the Democratic primary."
Bloomberg is taking steps to enter the primary because of his concerns that none of the current Democratic hopefuls can beat President Donald Trump. His virtually bottomless bank account could dramatically reshape the race, though no one knows yet exactly how.
"With regard to Michael Bloomberg, I welcome him in the race," Biden said. "Michael is a solid guy and let's see where it goes. I have no, no problem with him getting into the race."
Flanked by his wife and popular former Gov. John Lynch, Biden was here to file paperwork to add his name on the ballot. The hallways of the statehouse were jammed with his supporters, including dozens of firefighters and the president of the International Association of Fire Fighters.
Bloomberg also has longtime connections in the state after funding several Democratic initiatives over the years. But Biden has campaigned here for decades.
Biden confirmed that he has spoken with Bloomberg but would not elaborate.
“I’ve spoken to Michael a lot It’d be inappropriate for me to tell you about any private conversations we’ve had," Biden said.
