Johnson served as Utah state auditor from 1995 until 2013. He was succeeded on January 7, 2013 by fellow Republican John Dougall, a former state lawmaker, who thwarted Johnson's bid for re-election in the primary on June 26, 2012 and ultimately won election on November 6, 2012.
