Gordon and fellow Compassion Party candidate Anne Armstrong, who was the party's gubernatorial nominee, were arrested for marijuana possession on October 4, 2018. At the time of the 2018 election, the two candidates were a couple who led The Healing Church. This church is a denomination of Christianity that uses marijuana for religious purposes. Armstrong and Gordon were charged with having 48 pounds of marijuana with the intent to deliver it and for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, since the officers who made the arrest found a 15-year-old at their home. In response to their arrest, Armstrong said that the charges "appear politically motivated" and were intended to harm their candidacies. On Twitter, she wrote, "On way to the Wickford barracks under arrest for cannabis again. I guess our poll numbers were high enough to scare them into committing an atrocity. Pray for our police." Armstrong and Gordon were previously arrested in 2016 for marijuana possession with intent to deliver, but those charges were dismissed.
