On March 14, 2013, Katz was charged with marijuana possession after being pulled over by a state trooper for speeding. A spokeswoman for the State Thruway Police said, Katz was alone in the car, driving 80 mph in a 65 mph zone. Katz was in possession of a small bag containing less than 25 grams of marijuana. Katz voted against Assembly Bill 7347 in June 2012. The bill would legalize medical marijuana in New York for certified patients with serious illnesses. AB 7347 passed the Assembly by a vote of 91-52, but did not come to a vote in the Senate.
