Sanders campaign raises more than $46 million in February
March 1, 2020Bernie Sanders’ campaign disclosed Sunday that it received $46.5 million in donations in February.
During a month in which the Vermont senator became the frontrunner in the Democratic presidential field, Sanders’ campaign received more than 2.2 million donations. Those donations, the campaign said, included money from more than 350,000 people who had not donated to his presidential bid before.
February was a strong month for Sanders, with a strong performance in the chaotic Iowa caucuses and victories in New Hampshire and Nevada. The month ended Saturday with a second-place finish in South Carolina.
According to his campaign, Sanders’ 2020 campaign has now topped the number of individual donations it received in his underdog 2016 bid, in which he fell short against Hillary Clinton in his quest for the Democratic nomination.
Seeking to draw a contrast with some of his Democratic rivals, Sanders has repeatedly stressed that his campaign has been heavily funded by small donors. This statement from the campaign was no exception; it noted that the average donation to his campaign this election cycle has been $19. Another point of pride for Sanders‘ supporters: The profession listed most commonly among donors is “teacher.”
