Leonhardt was unopposed for the 2016 Republican nomination for West Virginia commissioner of agriculture and won the general election on November 8, 2016, unseating incumbent Walt Helmick (D). He assumed office on January 16, 2017.

Leonhardt served as a Republican member of the West Virginia State Senate, representing District 2, from 2015 to 2017.
