Secretary of Natural Resources (2011 - 2019)
Laird was appointed to lead the statewide natural resources agency by Governor Jerry Brown (D) on January 5, 2011. He had originally intended to seek the 2012 Democratic Party nomination for District 15 of the California State Senate, but announced in February 2011 that he would rather commit to his appointed position as natural resources secretary.
