Ford was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, and grew up in Belmont, North Carolina. He received a bachelor's degree in business administration from North Carolina A&T University in 1994, and graduated from the Institute of Political Leadership in 2009. His professional experience includes working as vice president of community development for Cardinal Innovations Healthcare. At the time of his 2017 run for mayor, Ford and his wife Deborah had one child.
