Policy Positions

Abortion & Reproductive Issues:

Pro-choice a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yes b) Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
Yes c) Should abortion be legal when the life of the woman is endangered?
Yes d) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
  e) Other or expanded principles:

Budget, Spending, & Tax Issues:

1) Budget Stabilization:

Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing New Jersey's budget.

Yes a) Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions
Yes b) Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees
No c) Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients
No d) An income tax increase on any tax bracket
  e) Other or expanded principles:

We need to reform the big-ticket state-level spending programs: pensions, Medicaid, K-12 schools, transportation. Then we can reduce the number of state employees.
Any furloughs and layoffs should be targeted to those services that the state itself has designated as "non-essential."
State employee salaries, pensions, and benefits need to be brought in line with those in the private sector.
We need to change how we pay Medicaid providers. They should be paid only for successful outcomes, not simply for treatment.

Campaign Finance & Government Reform Issues:

a) Do you support limits on the following types of contributions for state candidates?

No 1) Individual
No 2) Political Action Committee
No 3) Corporate
No 4) Political Party
No b) Do you support requiring full and timely disclosure of campaign finance information?
No c) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yes d) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
Yes e) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
  f) Other or expanded principles:

Limits on contributions only serve to advantage incumbents.
Complex campaign finance laws discourage many third party and independent party candidates form running, as they do not have the resources or expertise needed to ensure that they don't innocently run afoul of the laws and regulations.

Crime & Public Safety Issues:

Yes a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Yes b) Do you support alternatives to incarceration for certain non-violent offenders, such as mandatory counseling or substance abuse treatment?
Yes c) Do you support legalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana?
No d) Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
No e) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
Yes f) Do you support delaying the seizure of assets by law enforcement officials until after a conviction?
  g) Other or expanded principles:

Capital punishment should only be used where there is no doubt of guilt. Too many innocent people have been sentenced to death because of faulty eyewitness testimony, police/prosecutorial/crime lab incompetence or misconduct.
I support legalizing marijuana and ending the failed war on drugs.
Civil asset forfeiture is unconstitutional and should be abolished.

Economic Issues:

No a) Do you support government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes b) Do you support lowering taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes c) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector?
No d) Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
No e) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
No f) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage?
Yes g) Do you support legalized state-sponsored sports betting in New Jersey?
No h) Do you support a tax on short-term housing rentals in New Jersey?
  i) Other or expanded principles:

Education Issues:

No a) Do you support the national Common Core State Standards initiative?
Yes b) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
No c) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from New Jersey high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities in New Jersey?
  d) Other or expanded principles:

Education is a product and service. The best products and services are delivered at the best price when there is choice and competition. I support all methods to increase school choice: charter schools, vouchers, educational tax credits, education savings accounts.

Environment & Energy Issues:

No a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
No b) Do you support state funding for open space preservation?
No c) Do you support government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
  d) Other or expanded principles:

All energy providers should compete in the marketplace. They should neither get tax breaks or subsidies from the state.
Open space preservation should be done at the county/local level and through organizations like the Nature Conservancy.
Technology solutions to greenhouse gas emissions will be more effective than government regulations.

Gun Issues:

No a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
No b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
Yes c) Should citizens be allowed to carry concealed guns?
Yes d) Should a license be required for gun possession?
  e) Other or expanded principles:

Our focus should be on reducing deaths due to guns, not on gun control. 2/3 of the gun deaths are suicides, almost always from a handgun and a single bullet. 1/6 are from gang violence, related to the war on drugs. Our focus should be on suicide prevention and ending the failed war on drugs.

Health Issues:

No a) Do you support a universally-accessible, publicly-administered health insurance option?
No b) Do you support Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
No c) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
Yes d) Do you support allowing doctors to prescribe marijuana to their patients for medicinal purposes?
  e) Other or expanded principles:

The root cause of our problem is third-party payer; doesn't matter if it's the government or private insurers. Insurance should only be used for expensive, unexpected healthcare needs. Routine healthcare should be paid by the patient. That will spur choice and competition in healthcare services, make the patient more cost-conscious, and reduce premiums for health insurance.

Social Issues:

Yes a) Do you support same-sex marriage?
No b) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in New Jersey's anti-discrimination laws?
No c) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in New Jersey's anti-discrimination laws?
  d) Other or expanded principles:

Of the top three political parties, only the Libertarian Party opposed the Defense of marriage Act in 1996. The Libertarian Party believes all individuals have equal (not group-defined special) rights and protections under the law.

Legislative Priorities:

In the following area, please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.

The issues I will focus on are:
1. Reducing the major areas of State spending (by reforming Public Pension, Medicaid, School, and Transportation programs)
2. Using those savings to reduce taxes (Income, Sales, Gas) and begin paying down our debt
3. Expanding School Choice (Backpack Funding, Vouchers, Charter Schools)
4. Legalizing marijuana and ending the failed War on Drugs
