In June 2011, Jepsen expressed concern about Facebook's implementation of facial recognition technology to advise users to identify people in their uploaded photos. In a letter to Facebook's senior leadership, Jepsen argued that the lack of an opt-in mechanism in the feature could violate user privacy. Facebook responded by saying that the widespread use of the feature and lack of complaints regarding it were evidence of its popularity among users.
