Cameron has served as director of insurance since June 15, 2015. He was appointed to the position by Idaho Governor Butch Otter (R).

Cameron was a Republican member of the Idaho State Senate, representing District 27, from 2012–2015, and representing District 26 prior to that, beginning in 1990. After winning re-election in November 2014, Cameron vacated his senate seat in June 2015 to accept his appointment by Gov. Otter to serve as state insurance director.

Gov. Butch Otter (R) appointed Cameron as director of the Idaho Department of Insurance on May 29, 2015. His appointment went into effect on June 15.

Elections for the Idaho State Senate took place in 2014. A primary election took place on May 20, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 14, 2014. Incumbent Dean L. Cameron was unopposed in the Republican primary and was unchallenged in the general election.

Cameron won re-election in the 2012 election for Idaho State Senate District 27. He defeated Douglas T. Pickett in the Republican primary on May 15 and was unopposed in the November 6 general election.

Cameron had no opposition in the May 25 primary. He ran unopposed in the general election on November 2, 2010.

On November 4, 2008, Republican Dean Cameron won re-election to the Idaho State Senate, District 26 receiving 70.8% of the vote (9,704 votes), ahead of Democrat Scott McClure who received 29.2% of the vote (3,998 votes).
