Biden, DNC outraised Trump by over $150 million in August
September 9, 2020Donald Trump and the Republican National Committee raised $210 million in August, falling $154 million short of Joe Biden’s haul over the same period.
Biden and the Democratic National Committee previously announced raising a stunning $365 million last month, a record-shattering total that Trump failed to match. Neither campaign has yet released their cash-on-hand totals, but last month’s fundraising disparity increases Biden’s chances of closing Trump’s once-formidable cash advantage.
Trump’s campaign touted that August was its largest online fundraising month, bringing in $76 million over its four-day national convention. But Biden’s eye-popping cash haul coincided with the Democratic National Convention and his selection of Kamala Harris as his running mate. Harris, a prolific fundraiser herself, helped Biden dip into pockets of money that were less enthusiastic about his candidacy. In the two days following her announcement as the vice presidential nominee, the Biden campaign raised $48 million.
“The Trump campaign will have all the resources we need to spread the message of President Trump’s incredible record of achievement, on the ground and on the air, and define Joe Biden as a tool of the radical left,” Bill Stepien, Trump’s campaign manager, said in a statement released Wednesday afternoon.
Stepien went on to defend the campaign’s spending strategy, touting that they had “invested heavily in a muscular field operation and ground game that will turn out our voters,” while “the Biden campaign is waging almost exclusively an air war.”
The Trump campaign has raised eyebrows among Republican strategists, as they’ve opted to go dark on TV spending in several battleground states. They’ve also focused heavy resources on TV ads on Fox News.
